Silver
Silver darkens naturally when it meets air and moisture. Regular gentle care keeps it bright.
- Wipe after use with a soft, dry cotton or microfibre cloth.
- For light tarnish, wash in lukewarm water with a few drops of mild soap, rinse and dry completely.
- For heavier tarnish, use a silver polishing cloth or a silver dip made for the purpose, and follow its instructions.
- Avoid scouring pads, toothpaste and harsh powders. They scratch the surface and wear down fine detailing.
Plated pieces
Silver and gold plated pieces have a thin layer of precious metal over a base metal. Clean them only with a soft dry cloth. Do not soak them, use chemical dips, or rub hard, as this can wear the plating away.
Brass
- Dust regularly with a soft cloth.
- To restore shine, use a paste of tamarind or lemon juice with a little salt, rub gently, rinse well and dry immediately. A commercial brass polish works too.
- Dry brass completely after washing. Water left in crevices causes dark spots.
- Many decorative brass pieces carry a protective lacquer or antique finish. Clean these with a dry cloth only, without polish or acids.
Diyas and lamps
Let the lamp cool fully. Remove the wick, wipe away oil with a paper towel, then wash in warm soapy water and dry thoroughly. Regular cleaning prevents oil build-up and keeps the flame bright.
Marble
Wipe marble with a soft, slightly damp cloth and dry it. Keep it away from lemon, vinegar, kumkum water and other acidic liquids, which can etch the surface. Use coasters or a plate under anything wet.
Gemstones and malas
- Put on gemstone bracelets and malas after perfume, oils and lotions, and take them off before bathing or swimming.
- Clean with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid soaking, as water can weaken the thread.
- Selenite is soft and dissolves in water. Keep selenite plates and bowls dry and dust them gently.
Lacquered pieces
Dust lacquered pieces with a dry, soft brush or cloth. Keep them out of strong direct sunlight and away from water and cleaning chemicals.
Storing your pieces
- Store silver in its box, a zip pouch or an anti-tarnish bag, away from rubber bands and humid cupboards.
- Wrap pieces separately so they do not scratch each other.
- A sachet of silica gel or a piece of chalk in the box helps absorb moisture.
